Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I choose Saint Gregory the Great Catholic School for my child?
In the words of one of our parents: "The rigorous academics paired with competitive athletics make SGGS the total package! But...that's NOT why I chose SGGS. I chose it because it is an extension of our church and our faith. We belong here." And so will you.

Is financial aid available and how/when do I apply?
Yes, financial aid is available if you qualify.  Once your child is enrolled in the school, you may log on to the FACTS website and provide the information required.  If you have more questions, please contact the business office at 497-1811.

What are the school hours and do you have buses?
School hours are from 7:45 am - 2:45 pm (JK only dismisses at 2:25  pm, kindergarten dismisses at 2:35).  We provide morning care at 7 am and after school care from 3pm-6pm.  We do not have any busing.

Do you have to be Catholic to apply to Saint Gregory the Great?
No, you do not.  We have non-Catholic families here although we do have priority status for admissions: siblings of already enrolled children are considered for admission first, then we admit parishioner families, non-parishioner Catholics are next, and then non-Catholics.

What grades do you have?

We start at JK four-year-old classes.  Your child must turn four by September 30 of the school year that they enter Saint Gregory.  Our students graduate in eighth grade.

What are your students' opportunities for high school?
About 40-50% of our students attend Bishop Sullivan Catholic High School in Virginia Beach.  The balance of our graduates are admitted to various Virginia Beach, Chesapeake and Norfolk academies, private and public high schools.

What is your discipline policy?
It is critical that we all - teachers, administration, families, and of course students - work together to ensure a beneficial faith and learning journey. Our students use the Gospel teachings and Jesus Christ as their model of behavior. In doing so, students are guaranteed a safe and productive school environment. Throughout our school, positive reinforcements are the norm, but behavior systems exist to make consequences explicit as well. Strong partnerships and communication between our staff and families ensure success for all of our students!

I have lots of curriculum questions; how can I find out more about what the children are learning at your school?
There are two ways for you to learn about what we do in our classrooms: first, please refer to our "Curriculum" page on the ADMISSIONS tab of the website.  You will see a detailed synopsis of what is accomplished each year at each grade level.  Second, you may log into your RenWeb account. Teachers often post homework, lessons, and grades for each student.

Do you have resources classes for a child that needs extra help and/or advanced classes for those who are above grade level?
Yes, we have teachers on staff full-time for those children who learn differently.  We offer accelerated classes in math and literature for those who qualify first grade through eighth with our GATE program.  Students may also graduate with high school credits in Algebra I, Geometry and Spanish I. There is also a learning resource teacher on staff for children who may need a little bit of extra help in certain subject areas.

Do you have Full-Day Kindergarten?
Yes! And we offer a choice of full-day or half-day Junior Kindergarten as well. The hours for Junior Kindergarten and Kindergarten are 7:45 am-2:25 pm, half-day JK dismisses at 11:30 am.

Saint Gregory the Great Catholic School is AdvancED accredited and the Diocese of Richmond is AdvancED accredited as a school system.

AdvancED is the largest community of education professionals in the world. They are a non-profit, non-partisan organization that conducts rigorous, on-site external reviews of Pre-K-12 schools and school systems to ensure that all learners realize their full potential. While their expertise is grounded in more than a hundred years of work in school accreditation, AdvancED is far from a typical accrediting agency. Their goal is not to certify that schools are good enough. Rather, their commitment is to help schools improve.
Combining the knowledge and expertise of a research institute, the skills of a management consulting firm and the passion of a grassroots movement for educational change, AdvancED serves as a trusted partner to 34,000 schools and school systems—employing more than four million educators and enrolling more than 20 million students—across the United States and 70 other nations.
