Our Story

Our Story

Saint Gregory the Great Catholic School of Virginia Beach, Virginia, the largest Catholic school in the Diocese of Richmond, is located between the world’s largest naval installation and the popular Virginia Beach ocean resort. Our students hail from Norfolk, Chesapeake and even outlying areas of Suffolk and Northeastern North Carolina. Saint Gregory the Great Parish established our school in 1965 with the full support of the Catholic Diocese of Richmond as a parish school. Since its dedication, the school resonates with the charism and values brought by the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary from Immaculata, Pennsylvania and the Benedictine Monks of the Order of St. Benedict from Latrobe, Pennsylvania, along with the continued support of the parish.

We are committed to academic excellence and to fostering life-long learners with Christian values. Our faith is a life to be lived. We seek to motivate and model to our students - honesty, charity, and service to the community.

The school’s mission promotes a family atmosphere and a spirit of open communication. The faculty and staff are committed to the mission of Catholic education through continued professional development. Our goal as Catholic educators is to promote the Gospel message of Jesus Christ that fosters compassion and concern for others. Our focus is the development of the whole child by providing challenges within a nurturing environment where self-discipline, self-esteem, personal responsibility and Christian leadership are evident. Spirituality within the school community is nourished through prayer, liturgy, Faith Sharing, religious enrichment seminars and opportunities for outreach to the extended community.

Saint Gregory the Great Catholic School is recognized by the State of Virginia and is fully accredited by the Virginia Catholic Education Association (VCEA) and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and the Council on Accreditation and School Improvement (SACS CASI). Saint Gregory has also been awarded the Blue Ribbon School of Excellence Award by the United States Department of Education. Educational excellence, faith formation, and personal commitment characterize our Saint Gregory the Great Catholic School community. It is this tradition that we strive to pass on to our students who will be the leaders of this 21st century.

Saint Gregory the Great Catholic School is AdvancED accredited and the Diocese of Richmond is AdvancED accredited as a school system.

AdvancED is the largest community of education professionals in the world. They are a non-profit, non-partisan organization that conducts rigorous, on-site external reviews of Pre-K-12 schools and school systems to ensure that all learners realize their full potential. While their expertise is grounded in more than a hundred years of work in school accreditation, AdvancED is far from a typical accrediting agency. Their goal is not to certify that schools are good enough. Rather, their commitment is to help schools improve.
Combining the knowledge and expertise of a research institute, the skills of a management consulting firm and the passion of a grassroots movement for educational change, AdvancED serves as a trusted partner to 34,000 schools and school systems—employing more than four million educators and enrolling more than 20 million students—across the United States and 70 other nations.
